Juniors
The South African Golf Foundation was formed at the Royal Johannesburg Golf Club on 18 October 1960. On 23 November 1962 at a meeting in Bloemfontein, all Provinces attended and it was decided that Boys and Girls Championships would be held. Age limit was subsequently changed to 18 to comply with international standards.
Today the South African Junior Golf Foundation (SAJGF) is a well controlled, non profit golfing body, which has earned respect and recognition from all South African golf authorities and golfing bodies abroad. The Boland Division of the SAJGF is one of 13 divisions, the others being: Western Province, Southern Cape, Eastern Province, Border, Natal, Central Gauteng, North Gauteng, East Gauteng, North West, Limpopo, Free State/North Cape and Mpumalanga.
Any Boy or Girl aged less than 18, who is a member of a Golf Club in the Boland division with an official handicap, can become a member of the Boland Junior Golf Foundation by completing a registration form and paying the annual membership fees. Junior golfers can remain in the SAJGF until age 18 and may not play for the SAJGF in the year they turn 19.
During school holidays Junior Open tournaments are arranged, all members are invited to participate. The players' scores are captured onto an Order of Merit (OOM) system. This OOM system runs for over a 12 month basis and based on the scores in the Junior Open tournaments, players' scores are averaged and these are ranked per age group. Teams per age group are selected regularly to compete against other provinces. If a player is selected to represent Boland, the player receives full Boland Colours for this achievement. At the Boland Junior Open event there is always a formal prize giving where prizes, trophies and medals are awarded to those players that achieved top 3 positions in every division. The divisions are divided up as follows: A-Div 0-9 handicaps, B-Div 10-18 handicaps and C-Div 19-27 handicaps, max for boys and 30 for girls.
The National SAJGF also hosts various NOOM tournaments, but is on an 'invitation only' basis. We use our OOM as a guideline to select our top players for these events. Players ranked highest on this SAJGF NOOM can be selected by the SAJGF executive committee to be part of the SAJGF Golf Team who then competes internationally against other countries.
Join Boland Junior Golf and start your golfing career as a junior, competing against the others, do some travelling and have fun during your school holidays. The Foundation's aim is to produce good golfers, as well as young golfers who appreciate the rules and etiquette of golf and true sportsmanship.
